The Scope of Post-modern Geopolitical Studies

Joaquim Petit, Lluïsa Martí, Mercè Toset

Abstract

Postmodernism has weakened many of the basic geopolitical hypotheses. This is a fundamental theoretical study, investigates the intellectual and philosophical foundations of postmodern geopolitics, and seeks to answer the question that what the scope of the post-modern geopolitical studies is. The results indicate that the post-modern geopolitical discussion had been affected by the post-modern discussion in whole social sciences and the whole human geography. Two general paths can be recognized in the post-modern geopolitical studies. First, considering the post-modern geopolitics as the hesitation toward geopolitical meta-narratives in which the science of geopolitics is deconstructed. Second, considering the post-modern geopolitics as the studies due to questioning the modern geopolitical thought; in this regard, some issues such as the space of currents, time-space compression, deterritorialization, chronopolitics, into politics, and their consequences are geopolitically analyzed.
