Tresha Atterberry, Glanville Barnett, Colin Hodges

Abstract

Researchers have always been struggling to explain mental health. The most important point to control and reduce the psychological damages in today's society is to find the variables that affect mental health. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and coping styles with the mental health of teachers in the city of Manchester in the academic year of 2013-2014 From the statistical population of the study (766 teachers), 255 teachers were selected using random sampling method. The causal-comparative method was used for this research. Statistical analysis, multiple regression, and Pearson test were used to analyze the data. The findings of the research showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between personality traits and coping styles with the mental health of teachers. The results of regression analysis showed that personality traits and coping styles predict 9.35% and 6.28% of mental health changes, respectively. Also, the results of independent T-test showed that there is a difference in personality traits, coping styles and mental health of women and men in psychotic components, extraversion-introversion, enthusiasm for new experiences, consistency, and accountability, problem-oriented styles, emotional and avoidance styles. The researchers concluded that personality traits and coping styles of teachers could predict their mental health.
