The Philosophy of Technology and the Theory of International Relations: towards a Modern Social Ontology

Arisztid Csintalan

Abstract

Questioning the nature of technology and its relation with the theorization of international relations has not been of an equal importance in different times and places. The transformation related to the revolution in the Information and communications technology has brought the issue of its technology and performance mechanism from a marginal status into the context of the theorization process of this field due to deep effectiveness on the socio-economic formation of societies and reconfirmation of the international political economy. As such, studying the place and role of technology in international relations needs a philosophical reflection and contemplation regarding the nature of technology and its relation to the reality of the international relations. The assumption of the philosophy of technology is that the said phenomenon cannot be reduced to its technical and artificial appearance, but it deals with the creation and development of the realities and meaningfulness of it, i.e. with the ontological and epistemological meta-theoretical principles of thinking. The present study seeks to answer the question that what effect the technological transformation has on the political economy structure and international relations and what relation it has with theorization process in this area. This paper claims that, as the main element of the reconfirmation of the international political economy system, the technological transformation provides the political economy theorization process and international relations with an analytic framework.
