Russian Revanchism; the Confrontation of Great Powers in Central Eurasia

Selâhattin Katırcı, Şakir Yılmaz

Abstract

As the competitions between the two blocks of the East and the West of the world and particularly in Eurasia, many people believed that the period of geopolitical theories has come to an end. However, at the present, after many years of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it seems that the competition between the USA and Russia has just started in many regions of the post-cold war world, particularly the areas dominated by the former Soviet Union, the so-called “central Eurasia”. The absence of the Soviet Union and lack of undisputed sovereignty in central Eurasia created a power vacuum in the traditional areas dominated by this country. As such, other powers attended to these areas; this can be regarded as the beginning of a new great game in the region. Therefore, the present study investigates the competition between regional and transregional powers for achieving geopolitical superiority in central Eurasia
