Mobility Management of Wireless Sensor Networks Using Fuzzy Logic

Dominik Zima, Ignacja Król, Teofil Jedynak

Abstract

This article provides an innovative and intelligent controller that supports mobility in wireless sensor networks. The focus of this paper is particularly on the development of such a mobility strategy in sensitive applications such as personnel security in industrial environment. A fuzzy logic based controller has been proposed to assist the sensor of mobile nodes in making decisions about lunching or not lunching the process of switching the channel and implementing or not implementing the channel switching process to another connection position. To do this, we combine the two metrics we have, RSSI and link loss, to "predict" point-to-point losses and to support the process of lunching channel switching. A real industrial facility (oil refinery) has been used as a performance evaluation environment. Based on experiments conducted in the area under study, controlling the proposed mobility has shown significant advantages over other traditional solutions in the field of packet loss, packet delivery latency, energy consumption and switching rate of successful channels.
