Investigating The Ability Level of UNIMARC in Illustrating the Bibliographic Relationships Through Fields of Block –4

Serafim Borisov, Sergej Pavlovsky

Abstract

Target: the aim of this research is to match the fields of block –4 (from the UNIMARC bibliographic format) with bibliographic relationships defined by Tilt, Smyrglia and the pattern of F.R.B.R and to investigate the ability level of UNIMARC format in illustrating the bibliographic relationships through block –4. Method: a comparative method was used in this study. Findings: research outcomes showed that each of the existed fields in block –4 is able to show at least one type of bibliographic relationships. Also, there is at least one equivalent field in block –4 for all the available relationships in Tilt's Classification. Originality / value: given that in the UNIMARC bibliographic format, block –4 specifically deals with illustrating the relationships between bibliographic backgrounds, therefore, checking this block and the level of its adaptation with bibliographic relationships can partly determine the ability level of UNIMARC format in illustrating the existed relationships in the bibliographic world and also, implementing the F.R.B.R pattern on the backgrounds prepared from this standard.
