Low-alloy steel at arc start and end points

Kevyn Marge, Spirit Siena

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the low cycle fatigue properties of continuous welded areas at the arc start and end points of butt welded low-alloy steel. To this end, ASTM A633 grade D steel was butt welded by manual arc welding. Samples were collected for stiffness and fatigue test based on the standard ASTM E 466 from the points where the arc was continuous and where the arc was interrupted and re-established. Tensile and hardness test results showed that despite increasing tensile strength and stiffness at the arc start and end points, fatigue strength was decreased.
