Fuzzy adaptive control of surge instability in centrifugal compressors

Miyu Chinatsu, Yua Sayaka, Yuuki Miu

Abstract

Compressors are widely used in industrial processes, especially in petrochemical industries. But the performance of all aerodynamic compressors is limited by an instability called surge. Surge occurs in low mass flows. Surge reduces compressor performance and may even damage the compressor. In order to solve this problem, two methods of avoiding surge and active control of surge have been proposed. Active control of surge results led to far more promising results, because it can extend the compressor operation interval. In this paper, a fuzzy adaptive controller is introduced for active control of surge. The controller includes two fuzzy controllers. The first controller acts as the system controller, while the second controller adjusts the parameters of the first controller. The simulation results indicated that the controller will be able to stabilize the system in a wide range of operation points located on the left side of the surge line.
